Feeling nostalgia for my old game library and a 486SX PC

Last night I was installing some games for my almost 10yo nephew and thought I’d show him gameplay videos of some of the ones I grew up playing with my brothers on our Intel 486SX PC with all its 8Mb of RAM! Naturally, I ended up trawling the internet for all the games I could remember and found this archive of MS-DOS games on archive.org. Most of the games included therein are playable within the browser so I embedded them in the accordion below. The ones with asteriks next their titles only have gameplay footage from YouTube.

Body Blows
Commander Keen 4
Disney's Aladdin
Gobman
Golden Axe
Stunts
Prehistorik 1 & 2
Mortal Kombat 4*
Raptor: Call of the Shadows*
Galacta: The Battle for Saturn
Shinobi
Dangerous Dave
DOOM
Paratrooper

Looking at the graphics of the 90s to early 2000s games I played, it’s so cool to me how far the tech has progressed from then to now. I remember manually configuring your hard-drive’s Cylinders, Heads, and Sectors… formatting the PC and reinstalling Windows 95 every time we got hit with some bootsector virus… and tinkering with AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to configure IRQs, memory, drives, and whatnot. Fun times!

Here it is. In all it’s dusty 33Mhz glory! I took this photo some 10 years ago when I’d travelled home and found the vintage horizontal-style CPU box in a pile of junk.

Anyways, until next time…

Bye!
